Supporting young people and vulnerable adults within your band

In addition to the previous sections, do you safeguard young people and adults at risk within the band in the following ways?

Have a safety procedure and allocated responsibility for the transportation of young people and adults at risk, to and from band rehearsals and events?

No. Put clear guidance in place regarding who has responsibility for transporting young people and adults at risk in the course of band activities. Please read BandSafe 8: Supporting your members.

Supporting information: It’s important that the individual(s) concerned, their parents and carers, and band members are all clear on where responsibility lies in relation to arranging transportation during band activities.

Some examples to consider: If a parent arranges with another band member to give their child a lift to rehearsal, is that a personal agreement or associated with the band? What if a member of the band committee arranges a lift between a young player and another band member? Put clear guidance in place regarding who has allocated responsibility in different scenarios. Consider if/when you will need a signed agreement between parents/carers and the band, and how to store evidence of this agreement.

Allocate a person to be responsible for young people and adults at risk during band activities outside of the normal environment e.g. concerts and contests. This could be their parents/carer.

No. Having an agreement on who takes responsibility for young people and adults at risk during such activities provides clear guidance on the expectations of the parents/carers and the band. Please read BandSafe 8: Supporting your members.

Supporting information: It’s important that the individual(s) concerned, their parents and carers, and band members are all clear on where responsibility lies during band activities. It is also sensible to have a procedure for what to do if a child or adult at risk goes missing at a band rehearsal or event.

An example: A young player travels to a contest with the rest of the band by coach. There is an hour to wait before the results are announced so the band disperses and players arrange to meet again in an hour. Who has allocated responsibility for the young player to ensure they are safe during this time?
