We're pleased to announce the appointment of Sarah Baumann as Interim Chief Executive Officer, following a successful transitionary leadership period led by Nigel Stevens from January to the end of April 2026.
Sarah steps into the role after more than six years of growth and progression within the
organisation, having joined BBE in early 2019 and most recently serving as Chief Operating Officer. Her appointment reflects both her exceptional contribution to the organisation and the confidence placed in her leadership by the Board and senior team.
Throughout her time at BBE, Sarah has played a central role in shaping and delivering the organisation’s programmes, partnerships, fundraising activity, and operational
development.
Widely respected for her professionalism, strategic thinking, and
collaborative leadership style, she has become a key driving force behind many of BBE’s
most significant projects and organisational developments.
As COO, and later Programmes and Fundraising Director, Sarah led major areas of delivery across the organisation supporting teams to deliver impactful work, developing strategic partnerships, and helping to position BBE for long-term sustainability and growth. Alongside her role at BBE, Sarah also serves as Chair of Trustees at youth music development charity AMP, further reflecting her commitment to arts participation and music education.
Her appointment marks an important moment for Brass Bands England as the organisation enters a new phase of development focused on strengthening membership value, growing income streams, expanding partnerships, and increasing national impact across the brass band sector.
Speaking on the appointment, BBE Chair Mike Kilroy said:
“Sarah has demonstrated outstanding leadership, commitment, and vision throughout her time at Brass Bands England. Her progression from joining the organisation in 2019, to now stepping into the Interim CEO role is a reflection of both her personal growth and the trust she has earned across the organisation and wider sector. This appointment signals an exciting new chapter for BBE.”
Sarah Baumann said:
“It’s a privilege to take on the role of Interim CEO at such an important and exciting time for Brass Bands England. I’m incredibly proud of what the team has achieved over recent years, and I look forward to working with colleagues, members, partners, and supporters as we continue building a stronger, more connected and sustainable future for brass banding.”
BBE also extends its thanks to Nigel Stevens for his leadership and support during the
transition period and for helping guide the organisation into this next phase. Going forward, Nigel will lead on the development of BBE’s member benefits and commercial value proposition. This work will focus on strengthening the tangible benefits available to both bands and individual members, helping to improve retention, increase engagement, and build new partnerships across the brass, music, and events sectors.
Under Sarah’s leadership, BBE will continue to focus on championing brass bands across
England through advocacy, events, education, membership services, safeguarding, and
sector development while delivering a refreshed vision for the future of the organisation
and the wider brass band community.
