Pitch Flash Cards

Designed to be versatile enough for any musical learning setting, this collection of pitch-focused flash cards will become a staple in your delivery kit because they are simple, effective and endlessly adaptable. You can print them out - laminating them for extra durability. or display them digitally on a tablet or screen. A well-made, laminated set can serve as a reliable ‘go-to’ resource for many years to come.

Using your cards

Instead of just asking "What note is this?" (though you might want to try that to start with), have a go at these interactive ways to get the group involved:
  • The Finger/Slide Race: Hold up a card and see who can get their valves or slide into the right position first!
  • High or Low?: Show a note and play it, then show a second one. Ask the group if the new note is higher or lower than the first. Can any of the learners play or sing the second note? This builds a great ear for pitch direction.
  • The Human Soundboard: Give each learner a different pitch card. When you point to them, they play their notes. If they get good at it, you can "conduct" the group to play simple melodies together.
  • Sing & Check: Show a card and ask the group to sing what they think the note sounds like. Then, ask them to play it on their instruments to see how close they were!
  • The Transposition Challenge: If a cornet player plays this note, what note does a tenor horn need to play to match them? This is a fun way to introduce how different brass instruments work together.
  • Once your learners are comfortable, you can start "stacking" the cards to create more complex music:

  • Build-a-Note: Pick one rhythm card and one pitch card. The learners then perform that specific note using that rhythm.
  • Add some Style: Take it a step further by adding a performance direction (like ‘loud’ or ‘short’). Now the learners are thinking about pitch, rhythm, and expression all at once.
  • Mini-Compositions: Lay out a sequence of rhythm cards and assign a pitch card to each one. This is a brilliant way to help learners write their first real melody.
  • Don’t worry if you aren’t an experienced brass teacher yourself. Use the included valve/slide position cards as your own cheat sheet! You can hold them up alongside the note cards to give your learners a helpful visual prompt. Help your learners recognise notes by using simple memory triggers. For example:
  • The "D" Dips: Point out that the note D sits just below the stave—it Dips down from the bottom line.
  • The "C" Cuts: Show how Middle C has its own little ledger line that Cuts right through the middle of the note.
  • The E is on the bottom Edge: Point out that the note E sits on the bottom line - on the Edge of the stave.
  • Sometimes things don't go perfectly, and that’s okay! Here is how to handle a few common hurdles:
  • A learner is struggling to recognise a note. The Fix: Go back to the Visual Clues. Ask them, Is this a Dipping D or a Cutting C? Sometimes they just need a reminder of the landmark notes to help them figure out the rest of the stave.
  • The note is right on the page, but the finger/slide is wrong. The Fix: Use the Valve/Slide Position cards as a bridge. Hold the position card right next to the pitch card so they can see the link between the note on the stave and what their hands should be doing.
  • The brass players have tired lips. The Fix: Stop the blowing, but keep the learning! Have the learners air-play by moving their valves or slides without blowing, or ask them to sing the note names. It saves their muscles while still training their brains.
  • The notes sound strained or out of tune. The Fix: For brass players, pitch is often about the air. Encourage them to blow through the note or imagine they are blowing out a candle across the room. If they are struggling with a high note, let them play it an octave lower - confidence is more important than range at this stage.
  • One learner is getting all the notes right instantly. The Fix: Give them a transposition challenge. Ask them what that note would be on a different brass instrument, or have them conduct a Human Soundboard by pointing to other learners to play their notes.
  • Learners are confused by line vs. space notes. The Fix: Do a quick line or space game. Flash through the cards and have the learners simply shout out “line!” or “space!” without even naming the note. This helps them look at the position on the stave first.
