Following the success of its inaugural year, which saw all seven participants graduate with Distinction, our Future Leaders’ Programme is open for 2026/27 course applications.
What is the Future Leaders’ Programme?
Launched in 2024–25, the FLP course is scaffolded around the RSL Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Music and Performing Arts Learning. Across a year of study, participants receive specialist training in pedagogy, safeguarding, inclusive practice, and session planning, alongside personalised one-to-one mentorship. The programme provides practical tools tailored to the realities of working with children and young people in brass bands and community ensembles.
BBE’s Programmes and Fundraising Director, Sarah Baumann, commented: “The first year of the Future Leaders’ Programme was such an impactful experience for the candidates and team members, we are incredibly proud to be bringing it back in September. Whether you are a recent music graduate looking for an opportunity to build your skills, or a lifelong bandroom volunteer wanting to make sure you’re doing it right, the programme will have something for you.”
A supportive and collaborative programme
The Future Leaders’ Programme is ideal for those with some experience in an education or community youth setting, from recent graduates to peripatetic teachers. The pilot year saw candidates from across the country, all with unique experiences and musical backgrounds, come together to build confidence, develop and refresh their skills, and refine their approach to inclusive music leadership.
In addition to the one-to-one mentorship, candidates will meet three times in-person for hands-on Workshop Weekends, providing the opportunity for cross-collaboration and sharing of ideas.
One graduate of the 2024/25 cohort reflected that the programme is “the best thing that has happened in the brass band world in years” and strongly encourages others to take part.
An extended capacity
2026 has already seen the relaunch of BBE’s award-winning Brass Foundations, with a focus adjusted to ensure a programme that has a sustainable impact and lasting legacy on the brass map. At the heart of this is the commitment to supporting the future generations of brass band leaders, empowering them with levelled-up leadership skills, developed experience and practical tools.
With this in mind, the 2026/27 Future Leaders’ Programme will see an extended capacity that will allow for a maximum of 15 candidates.
Register for the info session
Taking place on Tuesday 5 May, the pre-application information session is the ideal way for those considering applying to learn more about the year-long course. It will cover application and programme requirements, an overview of modules, and provide prospective candidates the opportunity to meet the team.

Applications are open now on our Future Leaders' Programme page. Applications close on Friday 12 June at 9am, with candidate interviews in the final week of the month. Successful candidates will be notified the first full week in July.
