This course is ideal for Treasurers, Trustees or Committee members who want to better understand financial management and ensure they have correct structures and systems in place for your band.

Identifying best-practice organisational set-ups is vital in order to provide a stable and robust framework for your band’s music-making. This essential governance training for bands will:

  • Give you confidence that your legal responsibilities have been met

  • Suggest practical ways of managing and recording your day-to-day transactions

  • Share advice and guidance on best practice for budgeting and reporting

  • Ensure your organisation is in the best possible condition to obtain future funding

  • Give you access to BBE's Fundraising Service

What will the course cover?

  • What you need to know if you’re managing your band’s finances
  • Overview of the financial year
  • Reporting to statutory authorities
  • Administrative arrangements to manage your finances well
  • Accounts system e.g. separate bank account? An Accountant? What do you need?
  • Managing and recording your day to day transactions
  • Planning and reporting

Who will be delivering the training?

This session will be delivered by by BBE’s Finance and HR Manager Bev Shephard. Once a cornet player, Bev broke ranks to play viola, completing a BMus at Manchester University and a MMUS in Contemporary Music at Goldsmiths, University of Lonfon. She then began a career in Finance, Ops and HR, whilst working at Dulwich Picture Gallery, strategy body Culture East Midlands and education charity The Mighty Creatives.

Along with the 2-hour live training session on Zoom, attendees will be provided with a workbook and access to the training resources after completion. After the group session, all attendees will be offered a 1:1 follow-up to discuss any specific areas they need further support on.  

How much does it cost?

Understanding Finances is currently only available to BBE members, at a cost of £25 per attendee.
