Event description

Whether preparing for an entertainment contest or a concert, ‘repertoire choice’ will be an important area of consideration for the Conductor or Musical Director. However, pleasing, educating and even surprising your audience can sometimes be a challenge!

In this quarterly BBCA virtual networking event Michael Fowles and Mareika Gray delve into their wealth of experience and share their thoughts and ideas on putting together successful and inspiring programmes for all occasions.

Michael Fowles is regarded as one of the leading conductors of his generation, hailing from the rich musical tradition of North Staffordshire. He is an honours and postgraduate of the Royal Northern College of Music and has been Musical Director of Foden’s Band since 2009 and Professional Conductor of the Desford Colliery Band since 2016.

Having worked with many of the country’s leading bands Michael has a reputation for entertaining concert programming and high standards in competition. He is well known for having transferable skills having won Championship section contests with 11 different bands either in regular working relationships or on a freelance basis. As such he is much in demand both in the UK and abroad.

Mareika Gray is the Musical Director of the Eccles Brass Band, based in the North West of England and until recently was the Artistic Director and Professional Musical Director of the Ratby Co-operative Band Organisation. Throughout her career Mareika continues to feature in prizes at many competitions.

Mareika has now established herself among the leading brass band conductors, with her inspiring concert programs and her unique interpretations of major brass band works. She continues to appear at major concert halls including Symphony Hall Birmingham, the Royal Albert Hall in London and the Grieg Hall in Bergen. Looking forward, Mareika’s diary is always busy engaging with new bands all over Europe and beyond.

This networking session will be delivered using the Zoom webinar platform. The session will include an opportunity for attendees to ask questions of the presenters. This session will be recorded and made available in the BBE Member Resources library area following the session.
