I learned to play the cornet at about 8 years old in the Salvation Army at Barnstaple in North Devon under the tutelage of the Bandmaster, Maurice Denny. I progressed through the Young Peoples Band through the Senior Band until 1978 when I left home to pursue a 26-year career in the RAF Police. Throughout my RAF career, I was fortunate enough to play with RAF Voluntary Bands and various civilian bands, on Cornet, Soprano, Flugel and Tenor Horn. Leaving the RAF in 2004, I settled in Aylesbury, Bucks playing for the Amersham Band. In 2009 I joined Regent Brass under the baton of Alan Duguid until 2015 when I took a break from banding. In 2018, I rejoined Amersham Band under Paul Fisher however, this was short lived owing to the Covid Pandemic and personal circumstances. In 2023, I relocated to Devon joining the Lympstone Band on 1st Horn.
I have always had an interest in conducting and arranging. In the early 1990s I became assistant MD at the City of Lincoln band and, in 1998, I became the MD of the Dereham Band in Norfolk. A year later at Amersham I deputised for Andy Fawbert in his absence. Since moving back to Devon I have taken up the baton again and was appointed as MD of Wellington Silver Band in Somerset. I have been fortunate to have been associated with or worked under some amazing conductors from whom I have been able to learn a great deal.
