Ian began playing trombone at the age of 10 with the Laira Youth Band, Plymouth as their first ever trombone player. He went on to play professionally in pit orchestras in big bands including the Musicians Union Big Band.
He became Musical Director of Kingsbridge Silver Band when he was 19, then went on to conduct Plymouth Brass and Tavistock Town Band. Ian was fortunate to get some guidance on conducting from the late great Trevor Walmsley.
Moving to the Midlands for work Ian played for the Ind Coope Brewery Band in Burton on Trent and Amington Band in Tamworth before taking a break from banding due to work commitments.
Ian moved to the Forest of Dean where he eventually began playing again with Cinderford Band on solo trombone. Ian then returned to conducting in 2010 becoming Musical Director of Pillowell Silver Band.
As a conductor Ian has produced several prize winning performances at local and regional level including winning the fourth section regionals and winning entertainment contests as well as test piece and march contests in the West of England and Wales.
