The Brass Band Conductors' Association is delighted to partner with Derwent Brass, one of the Midland’s leading bands, and premier brass band within Derbyshire.
This inaugural workshop aims to provide an opportunity for conductors (both BBCA members and external) to study elements of conducting, and conduct a championship section band. It also aims to further the offering of the BBCA, and act as an opportunity for networking and discussion among BBCA members, providing an in-person event, as per the BBCA’s aim to support brass bands through supporting conductors within the medium.
The event will be guided by Derwent Brass Music Director and BBCA Project Officer Jack Capstaff, with support from other BBCA Exec members, and will cover several aspects of conducting, providing podium time to all active participants:
- Fundamental technique (2 hours)
- Conducting a brass 10 piece+kit
- Providing conducting feedback on technique, beat patterns and gesture
- Rehearsal (2 hours)
- Full band – 10 minutes per active participant
- Giving the opportunity for delegates to rehearse their piece for the concert as well as gain feedback from tutor/band on communication and rehearsal practice
- Concert performance (2 hours)
- Conducting Derwent Brass in concert
- Each participant conducts their own concert piece in the concert, with other repertoire performed by Jack Capstaff and Derwent Brass.
- Providing an opportunity for delegates to engage the audience, as well as conduct in a concert setting, and have a video of performance in concert dress.
All activities will be video and audio recorded, providing active participants with AV material for portfolios and application purposes.
Applications are open to both BBCA members and non-members alike, and places are available for both active and passive participation (passive participants will be invited to attend the full day, but podium time would be at the discretion of the organisers if time allows).
The closing date for entries is Sunday 6 April. Places will be given on a first come first served basis.
