Make a March

Brass in Concert and Brass Bands England working together to highlight banding heritage in the North East.

Make a March is a unit of work, an enrichment scheme or a resource from which to run an after-school club or to explore curriculum music in class-time across six sessions. It is aimed at year 4 and 5 in Key Stage 2 and will give children the opportunity to explore music that, simply, is marched to. It connects directly into our brass band cultural heritage but asks the children to look to the future by creating and composing new music to march to, with a fresh outlook and an untethered mindset!

The children will learn through listening tasks, practical ‘marching’ sessions, learning about context through access to quality archival sources and they will be carefully guided through composing tasks which encourage creativity and collaboration to generate new ideas. Make a March will give children a tangible sense of achievement in solid, musical skills against a backdrop of the historical traditions of brass bands.

Musically, children will learn about the importance of pulse and of rhythm. They will learn about the tempo of marches and their uses. They will learn about the function of a bass line, about textures and harmonies and how to shape a memorable melody.

We are really excited that we are encouraging children to learn the skills of a composer of brass band music and hope that this will be the beginning of a realisation that children can create new music, given the tools, the encouragement and the confidence to do so.

We will be supporting schools in their delivery of Make a March and we can’t wait to hear what they produce.
