Trailblazers - conductors panel discussion with Katrina Marzella-Wheeler

Katrina Marzella-Wheeler conducting a brass band
Monday, 10 February, 2025

Katrina Marzella puts questions to acclaimed and aspiring conductors about their conducting journeys - their inspiration, challenges and highlights at the BBCA's next virtual networking event on Thursday 27 March. Amongst the panel will be Jessica Sneeringer from the US’s first all-women Athena Brass Band showcased at the RNCM International Brass Band Festival this year. Joining her will be Anne Crookston, who has a wealth of experience from a wide-ranging musical career as a player, adjudicator and conductor, as well as guest women conductors setting out on their conducting careers.

Katrina Marzella-Wheeler is well-established in the brass music world as an instrumentalist, conductor and teacher. Katrina was the solo baritone horn player of the world famous Black Dyke Band from 2011 to 2020.  She is now in increasing demand as a conductor across the UK and Europe. Katrina aims to challenge norms with her programming and creative productions and has a commitment to increasing diversity on the conductor’s podium in brass and wind bands. In recent years, she has been the guest conductor of Eikanger Bjørksvik Mussiklag (NO), Festival Brass Band (BE), Regensburg Brass Band (DE), Aldbourne Band (UK), and is currently the conductor of the Scottish Champion Band, the Glasgow-based Cooperation Band.

This is one of the BBCA’s virtual networking sessions to celebrate and highlight diversity, and although open to everyone, we especially invite participants who are women or non-binary conductors.

This session will be delivered using the Zoom Webinar platform, giving ample opportunity for attendees to ask questions of the panel. This session will be recorded and made available in the BBE Members Resources area following the session.

This BBCA event is free to members and £5 to non-members.
