The Brass Band Conductors’ Association has confirmed the adjudicating panel for the live final of their flagship Conducting Competition, to be held on 18 June at Eccles Town Hall. Shortlisted candidates will demonstrate their conducting skills at the helm of both the Hammonds Band and The Eccles Borough Band as they battle it out in the final.
The BBCA is delighted that Paul Hindmarsh will provide this year’s guest adjudication. Paul was instrumental in the foundation of the BBC Festival of Brass, later becoming the RNCM Brass Band Festival, which he continues to present. Founder of the Brass Band Heritage Trust, he has also been responsible for a vast number of commissions for brass band, encompassing all the major band contests across the world. He was previously Associate Editor of British Bandsman and for the past five years he has been the Chairman of the European Brass Band Association’s Music Commission. Paul is no stranger to the BBCA conducting competition which has benefited from his expert adjudication on previous occasions and it’s great to welcome him back.
BBCA President Russell Gray commented “I am delighted that our competition is once again picking up after the very difficult times we have all had through Covid. The quality of bands on offer to work with, the adjudicators we have appointed and the opportunities for furthering aspiring conductors’ careers is second to none within the brass band genre. I hope that many conductors will apply for this wonderful opportunity to come together and get positive feedback on their performance.”
Joining Paul on the judging panel is BBCA Area Rep for the North of England, David Thornton. David is Musical Director of Grimethorpe Colliery Band, Senior Tutor in Brass Bands at the RNCM and is regarded as one of the foremost euphonium players and teachers of his generation with a global reputation as a performer and clinician.
