In recognition of being the inspiration and driving force behind the Birkwood Primary School Brass Band, Julie Allen MBE was presented with the BBE Services to Youth Award at a special concert at Birkwood Primary School, the school from which Julie retired as head last year. This performance was a ‘dress rehearsal’ for the band’s entry into the National Youth Brass Band Championships (Youth Champs) to be held in Corby on the weekend of 26th/27th March 2022.
Quoting from Julie’s nomination, “Mrs Allen has put music at the heart of Birkwood Primary School and believed passionately about the positive impact it can make to both school life and the local community. Evolving from a successful ‘Whole Class’ project over 10 years ago, Mrs Allen encouraged and funded pupils to continue to play, paid for musical exams and started a school brass band with the support of the local music service, school staff and inspirational local band - Grimethorpe. She encouraged and funded the school band to enter the National Championships and was passionate in ensuring the players were able to continue their journey at secondary school.
Mrs Allen has the respect of the school and the local community, leading Birkwood to become an outstanding school and championing the impact music has made. She celebrates all musicians and gives them the self-belief to be the best they can be. Hosting concerts by Grimethorpe in the school hall is incredible for a primary school. She supports and attends all performances and goes the extra mile to make everyone feel so valued. She leaves a lasting legacy of outstanding music making in school”.
Birkwood Primary School Band have also featured on the One Show with the Grimethorpe Band.
Julie was presented with the Brian W Hicks Shield for Services to Youth and a plaque by Rosie Banham, Membership Services Manager, Brass Bands England.
Nominations are open until 13th May 2022 to make a nomination for one of BBE's coveted awards.
