Brass in Concert’s commitment to youth development has been an important element of the Festival since relocating to Sage Gateshead in 2005, and this year the team have been delighted to be able to continue this fine tradition.
Since 2018, many young people, parents, carers and supporters have enjoyed the thrilling spectacle of the Youth Brass in Concert Championship. Unfortunately, scheduling and logistical issues have meant that the youth contest wasn’t possible this year (plans are in place to re-introduce it for 2023), however, an alternative programme of educational opportunities has already commenced.
This year’s programme, “Bare Necessities of Brass”, began with a series of workshops around the north of England at the beginning of November, delivered in partnership with Brass Bands England (BBE) and six northern music education hubs, working with young people in disadvantaged areas. Students from Thornhill Primary, St. Mary’s Catholic Primary, West Walker Primary, Ellington Primary, Linton Primary and Oakfield Infant School were supported by BBE’s Youth Brass Development Specialist, Helen Minshall, and local brass specialists from the music hubs.
The project will culminate in a performance and concert experience at Sage Gateshead on Friday 18 November, the day before the Brass in Concert Championship. 250 young players from schools and communities in the North East will have the opportunity to take part. Intermediate level players who have previously taken part in the programme have been providing additional peer support to elementary players, preparing them for the concert day, as well as principal players from the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain who will also act as tutors on the day.
By using experienced youth leaders and educators, Brass in Concert ensures that their working partnerships are made up of experts in their field. This will ensure a high-quality learning and performance opportunity at which all are welcome at the free final concert at 4.30pm on Friday 18 November at Sage Gateshead. Come along to give your support and encouragement to our next generation of brass players as they learn the Bare Necessities of Brass!
