Born 1961 in Bury, Chris was awarded the Mortimer Medal in 1998 and was Classic FM Music Teacher of The Year in 2001. He conducted Brighouse & Rastrick at the 1994 Leek Arts Festival, Grimethorpe at Reading Town Hall in 2007 and Black Dyke in both 2018 and 2019 in Bolton. He has adjudicated professionally since 1991, amassing over 100 major contests including multiple Swiss, French and English National Championships, Scottish Opens, Senior Cup and Trophy, Brass In Concert, National Brass Band Finals (1-4), multiple Yorkshire, Midlands, Scottish, North West and London Area contests and Whit Friday at Greenfield since 2015. He was featured in the 2020 BAFTA-winning Sky Arts Whit Friday programme.
Chris is a former member of NYBBGB and was conducted by Harry Mortimer in 1978. He was Head of Brass for Bolton 1983-1990 when he also taught at the RNCM. He was the horn player in James Shepherd Versatile Brass 1990-1995 and made his debut in the Philharmonia Orchestra at The Barbican in 2003 after two decades of UK freelancing.
Chris has conducted all over the World since 1985, from Norway to New Zealand, Japan to over 40 concerts in America on seven visits, 10 Royal Albert Halls, 16 Royal Festival Halls and numerous Symphony Halls and Bridgewater Halls. He has over 100 brass band arrangements published by Obrasso, Kirklees, Wright & Round and Studio and attended the May 2018 Buckingham Palace Garden Party, meeting Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for the second time for dedication to music education.
